Best Robot Vacuums for a Dorm or Small Apartment (2026)

In a room you also sleep in, the robot is the easy part — the dock is what you have to live with. The Shark Matrix Plus ($299.99) has the smallest one we could verify, at five inches wide, and that is why it wins here.

The Short Answer

Buy the Shark Matrix Plus at $299.99. Consumer Reports measures its self-emptying base station at 14 x 5 x 13 inches, comfortably the smallest verified footprint in this comparison. Alternatively, if maximum suction dominates your decision, the roborock Q10 S5+ delivers 10,000Pa for $329.99.

Most robot vacuum advice is written for a house, optimizing for suction and carpet depth. Your constraint is entirely different: one or two rooms of mostly hard flooring, occupied by a bed, a desk and four chair legs. The DGH Small-Apartment Robot Vacuum Score weights dock footprint at 30%, obstacle navigation at 25%, hands-off upkeep at 20%, and value at 25%. Suction is deliberately excluded as a weighted factor.

A self-emptying base is permanent furniture. Three of these five wash their own mop pads, which requires clean-water and dirty-water tanks. Consumer Reports measures the sibling roborock Qrevo Pro dock at 21 x 19 x 13 inches. Compared to that, the Shark Matrix Plus base is 14 x 5 x 13 inches, verified August 2026. In a studio apartment, that single measurement decides the purchase.

Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum & Mop with Sonic Mopping, Matrix Clean, CleanEdge, HEPA 60-Day Self-Empty Base, 360° LiDAR Mapping, Self-Cleaning Brushroll, Wi-Fi, AV2610WA
$299.99

(Current price, subject to change)

  • Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 robot vacuum and mop, AV2610WA
  • HEPA self-empty base rated for 60 days
  • Sonic mopping pad assembly
  • 360-degree LiDAR mapping sensor
  • Self-cleaning brushroll

Start with the measurement that governs a small room. Consumer Reports lists this exact model, the AV2610WA, with a base station of 14 x 5 x 13 inches, a footprint nothing else in our comparison approaches. Consumer Reports additionally records a 13.25 inch diameter, a 4.5 inch clearance, and 60 min to clean a room. Measure the gap beneath your bed frame against that clearance before ordering. The Amazon listing confirms the remainder: a HEPA self-emptying base rated for 60 days, 360-degree LiDAR mapping, sonic mopping, CleanEdge and a self-cleaning brushroll. That brushroll matters in a dormitory, because hair accumulating around a bed strands most robots first. The honest limitation is navigation. Consumer Reports lists no built-in camera, so this machine maps geometry accurately but cannot identify a charging cable. Compared to the eufy and its 9.0 on obstacle navigation, the Shark manages 7.0 on that factor. Dock footprint fit carries the heaviest weighting in the DGH Small-Apartment Robot Vacuum Score, so its narrow base still delivers the highest composite here. Amazon itself is the seller on the listing, at $299.99.

What We Love

  • Consumer Reports lists the dock at 14 x 5 x 13 inches — the smallest base station we verified in this group.
  • The 60-day HEPA self-empty base means you handle dust roughly twice a semester, not twice a week.
  • 360-degree LiDAR maps a room quickly, so you can send it to one room instead of the whole floor.
  • Sold and shipped by Amazon at $299.99, with the standard Amazon return window.

What Could Be Better

  • Consumer Reports lists no built-in camera, so it navigates by LiDAR alone and cannot recognize a loose charging cable.
  • The dock empties dust only — the mop pad is yours to rinse.
  • Consumer Reports puts its clearance at 4.5 inches, taller than the roborock Qrevo Pro's 3.5, so a low bed frame may be off limits.

The Verdict

If the room is small, the dock decides this. The Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum & Mop with Sonic Mopping, Matrix Clean, CleanEdge, HEPA 60-Day Self-Empty Base, 360° LiDAR Mapping, Self-Cleaning Brushroll, Wi-Fi, AV2610WA takes the top composite at 8.1 because Consumer Reports measures its self-empty base at five inches wide, and that is the difference between a machine you tuck away and one you rearrange furniture around. At $299.99 it is also the cheapest Amazon-sold pick here.

Best Suction That Still Fits: roborock Q10 S5+ Robot Vacuum and Mop, 10,000Pa Suction, Upgraded from Q8 Max+, 70-Day Self-Emptying, Obstacle Avoidance, Sonic Mopping, Dual Anti-Tangle Design, Auto Mop Lift, Black

$329.99

(Current price, subject to change)

  • roborock Q10 S5+ robot vacuum and mop
  • Self-emptying dock rated for 70 days
  • Sonic mopping pad with auto mop lift
  • Dual anti-tangle brush and side-brush design

This is the roborock for a small apartment, and its difference from the Qrevo below justifies listing both. The Amazon listing describes the Q10 S5+ as 10,000Pa with 70-day self-emptying, sonic mopping, auto mop lift and a dual anti-tangle design. Critically, it performs no mop washing. Its base station accepts dust and nothing else. Consumer Reports measures the sibling roborock Q10 X5+, the nearest relative in that dust-only dock family, at 11 x 7 x 9 inches. Compared to 21 x 19 x 13 inches for the all-in-one Qrevo Pro, that is a genuine reprieve in a studio. Consumer Reports records 60 min to clean a room on that sibling. The 10,000Pa figure is the highest here, though a dormitory holds less carpet than you assume. Dock footprint fit carries 30% of our weighted composite, which is why this ranks second. Auto mop lift is the underrated specification. The Amazon listing confirms the pad raises automatically, which enables the machine to cross a central rug without dampening it. You surrender mop automation entirely. Rinsing the pad occupies roughly 90 seconds at a bathroom sink. Roborock's own storefront is the seller on the listing rather than Amazon.

What We Love

  • The Amazon listing states 10,000Pa suction, the highest figure in this roundup.
  • The dock handles dust only for 70 days — no clean-water or dirty-water tanks to house.
  • Auto mop lift means the pad raises off a rug instead of dragging a wet stripe across it.
  • Dual anti-tangle design, which is the right answer to long hair around a bed.

What Could Be Better

  • You rinse the mop pad yourself — the dock does not wash it.
  • Roborock's own storefront is the seller on the listing rather than Amazon directly.
  • At $329.99 it costs $30 more than the Shark for a dock that takes up more room.

The Verdict

This is the pick if your floor is more carpet than tile. The Amazon listing puts the roborock Q10 S5+ Robot Vacuum and Mop, 10,000Pa Suction, Upgraded from Q8 Max+, 70-Day Self-Emptying, Obstacle Avoidance, Sonic Mopping, Dual Anti-Tangle Design, Auto Mop Lift, Black at 10,000Pa, the strongest here, and its dock only deals with dust — so you get the suction without giving a wall to a water-tank station. It lands at 7.9, just behind the Shark, and the gap is entirely dock size.

  • eufy X10 Pro Omni robot vacuum and mop combo
  • Omni base station with auto mop washing and drying
  • Dual spinning mop pads with 12mm auto-lift
  • Self-emptying dust collection

Everything the eufy performs well concerns a messy room, and everything it performs badly concerns a small one. The Amazon listing specifies 8,000Pa suction, dual mops with 12mm auto-lift, carpet detection, AI obstacle avoidance, automatic mop washing, drying and self-emptying. That 12mm lift is the highest figure in our comparison. It enables the pad to clear a rug edge rather than climbing aboard while wet. AI obstacle avoidance produces the top navigation score of 9.0. A robot that identifies a sock or a cable requires rescuing less often, and small rooms concentrate exactly those objects. Then arrives the dock. Consumer Reports measures the eufy Omni C20, a sibling in the same Omni base-station family rather than this model, at 18 x 11 x 13 inches. Its recorded time to clean a room is 80 min. That is a standing appliance carrying two water tanks. Dock footprint fit carries 30% of our weighted composite, so a 9.0 navigation score cannot rescue the total. EufyHome's storefront is the seller on the listing, at $449.99. You pay the most here for automation you have least room to accommodate. Given a hallway wall, that calculation reverses entirely.

What We Love

  • The Amazon listing states 12mm mop auto-lift, the highest lift figure in this roundup — enough to clear a rug edge.
  • AI obstacle avoidance and carpet detection, which is what a furniture-dense room actually needs.
  • The base washes and dries the mop pads, so a damp pad never sits in your room.
  • Dual spinning mops apply pressure rather than dragging a flat pad.

What Could Be Better

  • The Omni dock is a full-size base station — Consumer Reports lists eufy's Omni C20 dock at 18 x 11 x 13 inches.
  • At $449.99 it is the most expensive pick here by $50.
  • EufyHome's storefront is the seller on the listing rather than Amazon directly.

The Verdict

You have a one-bedroom, a floor that collects cables and shoes, and a wall you can actually spare. That is the situation the eufy X10 Pro Omni Robot Vacuum and Mop Combo, Dual Mops with 12mm Auto-Lift, 8,000Pa Suction, Carpet Detection, AI Obstacle Avoidance, Auto Mop Washing, Auto Drying, Self-Emptying answers. Its AI obstacle avoidance earns the top 9.0 in this roundup, and its Omni dock costs it — a 4.0 on dock footprint fit drags the composite to 6.9. Buy it for a one-bedroom with a spare wall, not for a dorm room.

  • dreame L10s Ultra robot vacuum and mop combo
  • Self-emptying and self-refilling base rated for 60 days of cleaning
  • Auto mop cleaning and drying
  • AI navigation system

One note about where you purchase this. The seller on the Amazon listing is Woot, which is Amazon's own outlet operation rather than an unfamiliar third party. Returns route through Woot rather than Amazon.com, which is worth understanding at $299.89. The Amazon listing specifies automatic mop cleaning and drying, plus a self-refilling and self-emptying base rated for 60 days. It also confirms 5300Pa suction, AI navigation and Alexa compatibility. That combination delivers the most hands-off base station in our comparison, at the lowest price. Two considerations pull it downward for a small apartment. First, 5300Pa is the lowest suction figure here, adequate for hard flooring but thin against genuine carpet. Second, self-refilling requires a clean-water reservoir and a dirty-water reservoir. Those tanks are precisely the volume that enlarges an all-in-one dock. Compared to every rival here, this base station occupies the largest standing footprint, which produces its 3.0 dock rating. Hands-off upkeep carries only 20% of our weighted composite, against 30% for dock footprint. It remains the only listing that explicitly names Alexa.

What We Love

  • The Amazon listing states a self-emptying and self-refilling base good for 60 days of cleaning.
  • Auto mop cleaning and drying, so the pad is never left damp in a room you sleep in.
  • The only pick here whose listing explicitly states Alexa compatibility.
  • $299.89 is the lowest price on this page for a fully automated base.

What Could Be Better

  • 5300Pa is the lowest suction figure in this roundup by a wide margin.
  • Self-refilling means a clean-water tank and a dirty-water tank standing in the room permanently.
  • Woot is the seller on the listing rather than Amazon.com directly, which affects the return path.

The Verdict

Your floors are hard surface, mopping is the chore you resent, and you have a wall to surrender. On that brief the dreame L10s Ultra Robot Vacuum and Mop Combo, Auto Mop Cleaning and Drying, Self-Refilling and Self-Emptying Base for 60 Days of Cleaning, 5300Pa Suction and AI Navigation, Compatible with Alexa gives you the most automation for the least money. The Amazon listing puts it at 5300Pa, the lowest here, with a base that empties itself, refills itself and dries the mop for 60 days. It scores 6.8, held down by a 3.0 on dock footprint.

  • roborock Qrevo Series robot vacuum and mop (QV 35A)
  • All-in-One dock with automatic mop washing
  • Spinning mop assembly
  • Anti-tangle main brush and side brush

Two roborock models an eyelash apart in price can embody opposite ideas, so here is the concrete difference. The Amazon listing for the Qrevo Series, model QV 35A, specifies 8000Pa, anti-tangle brushes, smart obstacle avoidance, automatic mop washing, an All-in-One dock and a spinning mop. The Amazon listing for the Q10 S5+ specifies 10,000Pa, 70-day self-emptying, sonic mopping and auto mop lift, with no mop washing. Versus that machine, the Qrevo surrenders suction and purchases mop automation. Which suits a small apartment depends on the dock, and Consumer Reports renders that comparison concrete. The sibling Qrevo Pro measures 21 x 19 x 13 inches, requiring 90 min to clean a room. Consumer Reports lists the dust-only roborock dock, represented by the Q10 X5+, at 11 x 7 x 9 inches. Nineteen inches of wall versus seven is no detail in a room with one usable wall. Dock footprint fit carries 30% of the DGH Small-Apartment Robot Vacuum Score, and that single factor separates these two roborocks. The spinning mop genuinely outperforms a vibrating pad. Roborock's own storefront is the seller on the listing, at $399.99.

What We Love

  • The Amazon listing states 8000Pa with an All-in-One dock that washes the mop automatically.
  • A spinning mop applies pressure rather than dragging, which is the better mopping mechanism.
  • Anti-tangle brushes and smart obstacle avoidance, both stated on the Amazon listing.
  • Upgraded from the Qrevo S, so it is the current generation of a well-established line.

What Could Be Better

  • Consumer Reports lists the sibling Qrevo Pro dock at 21 x 19 x 13 inches — the largest footprint referenced on this page.
  • At $399.99 it costs $70 more than the roborock Q10 S5+ and has 2,000Pa less suction.
  • Roborock's own storefront is the seller on the listing rather than Amazon directly.

The Verdict

Two roborocks appear on this page and they solve different problems. The roborock Qrevo Series Robot Vacuum and Mop, Upgraded from Qrevo S, 8000Pa Suction, Anti-Tangle Brushes, Smart Obstacle Avoidance, Auto Mop Washing, All-in-One Dock, Spinning Mop, Black (QV 35A) automates the mop and gives up suction and floor space to do it; the Q10 S5+ does the reverse. In a small apartment the reverse is usually right, which is why this scores 6.5 against the Q10 S5+'s 7.9 despite costing $70 more.

Score Formula

weighted composite (0-10): dock_footprint_fit (30%) + obstacle_navigation (25%) + hands_off_upkeep (20%) + value_per_dollar (25%), each factor normalized to a 0-10 scale

Score Factors

  • Dock Footprint Fit (30%)The base station is permanent furniture, and in one or two rooms it is the single biggest cost of ownership that nobody quotes. A dust-only dock plugs in beside a dresser. An all-in-one dock with clean-water and dirty-water tanks takes a nightstand's worth of floor and a full outlet. This factor is scored from Consumer Reports' published dock dimensions for each model, or for its closest sibling in the same dock family.
  • Obstacle Navigation (25%)Small rooms are obstacle-dense: four chair legs, a bed frame, a rug edge and a run of charging cables. This factor is normalized from stated navigation hardware — LiDAR mapping, AI or camera-based obstacle recognition, anti-tangle brush design, and automatic mop lift for rug edges.
  • Hands-Off Upkeep (20%)How many days pass between interventions. The calculation uses stated self-empty capacity in days, whether the dock washes the mop pads, and whether it dries them. A damp pad matters more in a room you sleep in than in a laundry room.
  • Value per Dollar (25%)Live verified price, weighed against the other three factors combined. Prices were verified August 2026.

DormGearHQ analysis of Amazon listing specifications and Consumer Reports published dimensions, August 2026

What to measure before ordering

Three measurements determine whether a robot vacuum functions in your space, and none appears in the headline specifications. They are also what the DGH Small-Apartment Robot Vacuum Score cannot decide for you. First, measure the widest clear run of flooring against a wall with an outlet. Compare that against the dock dimensions above. Anything performing mop washing requires between 11 and 19 inches of width, by the Consumer Reports figures. A dust-only dock requires five to seven. Second, measure under-furniture clearance. Consumer Reports lists the Shark Matrix Plus at 4.5 inches and the roborock Qrevo Pro at 3.5 inches. A low platform bed can therefore eliminate a model outright. Third, count your loose cables. LiDAR maps walls and furniture, but does not identify small objects on flooring. On a LiDAR-only machine, the cables behind your desk remain your responsibility.

Noise is the fourth consideration, and it separates into two distinct sounds. The robot running produces a steady hum you can converse over. The dock emptying produces a short, loud burst. Every self-emptying base here behaves that way, and it is unwelcome at 2 am beside a sleeping roommate. All five machines accept app scheduling, so the practical remedy is identical regardless of purchase. Schedule the cycle for a window when the room is empty, which normally means mid-morning on a class day. Our five differ on voice control. Compared to the others, the dreame L10s Ultra is the only listing explicitly naming Alexa compatibility. The remaining four state app control without naming an assistant, so confirm it on the listing rather than assuming.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a robot vacuum worth it in a space this small?

It depends on whether the floor is the chore. In one or two rooms you can sweep the whole place in five minutes. A robot is not saving you an afternoon — it is removing a task you would otherwise skip for three weeks. That is a real benefit if you shed hair, cook in the room, or have a rug that collects everything. It is a poor use of $300 if your floor is already clear and you genuinely do sweep it. Be honest about which of those you are. Remember that the base station is a permanent object either way.

Is a self-emptying dock worth the space in a small apartment?

This is the closest call in the category, and the answer is not automatically yes. In a small apartment the dustbin fills slowly because there is less floor. Emptying it by hand every week or two is not a burden. A self-emptying base buys you a 60- or 70-day interval and costs you a permanently larger dock. The stronger argument is allergies: emptying a bin by hand puts dust back in the air of a room you sleep in, and a sealed HEPA base does not. If neither of those applies to you, a dock that only charges is a legitimate choice and takes the least room.

Where do you actually put the dock in a dorm room?

Against a wall with an outlet, with roughly three feet of clear floor in front so the robot can approach it straight. Avoid putting it directly under a lofted bed, where the robot has to navigate bed posts on every return trip. The realistic spots in a standard dorm room are the gap beside a dresser, the strip of wall under a window, or the foot of the closet if the door stays open. Measure that gap first and let it eliminate models, rather than choosing a model and hoping. A dock with water tanks also needs enough clearance above it to lift the tanks out.

Will it get stuck on cables and chair legs?

Chair legs and bed frames are not the problem. LiDAR mapping handles fixed obstacles well, and every model here maps the room. Loose cables are the problem, and they are what actually strands a robot in a small room, because a desk area concentrates chargers, lamp cords and a power strip in a few square feet. Machines with camera-based or AI obstacle recognition identify a cable and steer around it; LiDAR-only machines do not. Whichever you buy, a $10 pack of adhesive cable clips along the desk edge does more for reliability than any spec on the box.

How loud is a robot vacuum in a room you sleep in?

There are two sounds and they are different. Running, a robot vacuum is a steady hum comparable to a bathroom fan. You can read or hold a conversation through it, and most people find it far less intrusive than an upright vacuum. Emptying, a self-emptying dock is briefly very loud, on the order of a hand dryer, for several seconds at the end of a run. The second sound is the one that will wake a roommate. Every model here is app-scheduled, so set the run for a window when the room is empty and the noise question mostly disappears.

Should I get a robot vacuum or a cordless stick vacuum for a dorm?

A stick vacuum is the better first purchase for most dorm rooms. It costs less and stores in a closet instead of standing on the floor. It cleans the places a robot cannot reach — a mattress, a desk chair, the inside of a car — and needs no map or app. A robot earns its place when floor area is large enough that daily sweeping is a real chore, or when the point is that cleaning happens without you remembering. If you are buying only one cleaning tool for a single dorm room, buy the stick vacuum first.

Bottom Line

Skip a robot vacuum entirely if you are furnishing a single dorm room and buying only one cleaning tool. A cordless stick vacuum costs less, stores in a closet, and reaches the mattress and desk chair a robot cannot. Skip it too if there is no wall with an outlet and three feet of clear floor in front of it, because the dock has nowhere to live.
