The Short Answer
Anyone furnishing a first apartment should buy the Sweetnight CoolNest Hybrid at $499.99. It is the only mattress compared here with a coil support layer underneath the memory foam, and Sleep Foundation rated its temperature control above every rival with a published figure.
Every mattress decision before this one was made by a housing office. A dormitory bed measures Twin XL because the university purchased the frame, and owned the mattress. Moving off campus transfers all three into your hands, usually with a deposit. This guide ranks five queen mattresses on the DGH First-Apartment Sleep Score, a weighted composite explained further down.
Four of these mattresses are entirely foam, and only the Sweetnight places coils beneath its comfort layers. Memory foam softens wherever your body is warmest, which is why it retains heat overnight. Every listing here advertises cooling, yet the published laboratory figures separate sharply. The heat management factor in our composite is set by those figures rather than by what a bed is built from. Sleep Foundation explains the CoolNest ratings as cooling scores tracking profile thickness, and the 12-inch build sold here is the thinnest and best-rated of that line.

Best Overall: Sweetnight CoolNest Hybrid Queen Size Mattress 12 Inch, Cooling Pillow Top | Cool Night Sleep for Hot Sleeper, 7-Zone Ergo Support for Pressure Relief, 4 Stage Cool Enhanced Breathability, Medium Firm
Sweetnight CoolNest Hybrid Queen Size Mattress 12 Inch, Cooling Pillow Top | Cool Night Sleep for Hot Sleeper, 7-Zone Ergo Support for Pressure Relief, 4 Stage Cool Enhanced Breathability, Medium Firm
- Sweetnight CoolNest Hybrid queen mattress, compressed in a box
- 12-inch profile
- Cooling pillow top
- 7-zone ergonomic support layer
- Medium firm feel
Heat is what makes people regret an inexpensive queen, and the Amazon listing for Sweetnight CoolNest Hybrid Queen Size Mattress 12 Inch, Cooling Pillow Top | Cool Night Sleep for Hot Sleeper, 7-Zone Ergo Support for Pressure Relief, 4 Stage Cool Enhanced Breathability, Medium Firm claims a 12-inch build with a cooling pillow top and seven-zone ergonomic support. Sleep Foundation's test lab supplies the independent check: published temperature figures step downward as the profile thickens, at 7.5/10 for 12 inches, 7.0 at 14, 6.0 at 16. Sleep Foundation reads that curve as tracking profile thickness rather than the coil unit, so the coils hold the edge while the thin profile earns the cooling figure. The build sold here is the thinnest CoolNest, and the only mattress Sleep Foundation scored above 7 on temperature control. Their hybrid position ratings put side sleepers clear at 8.5/10, back at 7.0 and stomach at 6.5, in the middle weight band to 230lbs. It rates highest of the five for stomach sleepers, narrowly, and its 100-night trial and 10-year limited warranty are shorter than Nectar's. That position is the one budget foam serves worst, and a compressed hybrid holds a steel coil unit the four foam beds lack. That produces a heavier, more awkward carry, and paying $280 more than the Zinus buys the best measured cooling figure plus an edge with steel under it.
What We Love
- The only coil support layer in this roundup, which is what holds the edge when the bed doubles as seating.
- Sleep Foundation's test lab put the 12-inch CoolNest at 7.5/10 on temperature control, the highest verified cooling figure here.
- 8.5/10 for side sleepers in the 130 to 230 pound band, the widest usable sleeper range on this list.
What Could Be Better
- The coil unit makes this the heaviest box here — plan on two people for a stairwell.
- A 100-night trial and 10-year limited warranty, against the Nectar's 365 nights and Forever Warranty.
- The listing does not state CertiPUR-US or fiberglass-free, both of which the Lucid puts in its title.
The Verdict
If you are buying one mattress to survive an entire lease, and you can reach $499.99, this is the pick. The Sweetnight CoolNest Hybrid Queen Size Mattress 12 Inch, Cooling Pillow Top | Cool Night Sleep for Hot Sleeper, 7-Zone Ergo Support for Pressure Relief, 4 Stage Cool Enhanced Breathability, Medium Firm holds the highest measured cooling figure on this page and the only edge with steel underneath it. No other bed here does both.
Best Trial & Warranty: Nectar 12" Memory Foam Mattress, Queen, Medium Firm | Contouring Memory Foam, Cooling Top Layer, Back Pain & Pressure Relief, Mattress in a Box, 365-Night Trial & Forever Warranty
Nectar 12" Memory Foam Mattress, Queen, Medium Firm | Contouring Memory Foam, Cooling Top Layer, Back Pain & Pressure Relief, Mattress in a Box, 365-Night Trial & Forever Warranty
- Nectar 12" memory foam queen mattress, compressed in a box
- 12-inch profile
- Cooling top layer over contouring memory foam
- Medium Firm feel
- 365-night trial and Forever Warranty
The Amazon listing title for the Nectar 12" Memory Foam Mattress, Queen, Medium Firm | Contouring Memory Foam, Cooling Top Layer, Back Pain & Pressure Relief, Mattress in a Box, 365-Night Trial & Forever Warranty does most of the arguing on its own. It promises contouring memory foam beneath a cooling top layer, a 1-year trial and a Forever Warranty. Those last two commitments are what justify the price rather than anything unusual in the foam itself. Sleep Doctor rates the Nectar Classic on the firmer end of medium, and recommends it for side and back sleepers below 230lbs. Their stomach sleepers rated it least favorably, and the heavier ones sank too far for comfortable spinal alignment. On temperature they are careful in a way the listing is not, noting that foam mattresses tend to sleep hot generally. This model manages the problem competently, though they add that hybrid or latex construction remains more temperature neutral. That caveat explains why the Sweetnight outranks this bed on the DGH First-Apartment Sleep Score despite costing considerably less. Where Nectar stands genuinely unmatched is the safety net, because no rival here offers a trial longer than 100 nights. If you have never chosen a firmness before, that window is not a luxury feature but the central reason to buy.
What We Love
- 365-night trial and a Forever Warranty, both stated in the Amazon listing title — the strongest safety net here by a wide margin.
- Sleep Doctor rates it 6 out of 10 for firmness and calls it the firmer end of medium, which suits side and back sleepers under 230 pounds.
- Sleep Doctor found it does a decent job of staying cool for an all-foam bed, better than the budget foam on this list.
What Could Be Better
- At $699.00 it is the most expensive mattress here and scores 5.5 on value per dollar because of it.
- Sleep Doctor's stomach sleepers rated it least favorably, with heavier stomach sleepers sinking too far.
- No coils, so it still sleeps warmer than the Sweetnight and gives up the same edge support every all-foam bed gives up.
The Verdict
You are buying a return policy as much as a mattress, and for a first-time buyer that is defensible. The Nectar 12" Memory Foam Mattress, Queen, Medium Firm | Contouring Memory Foam, Cooling Top Layer, Back Pain & Pressure Relief, Mattress in a Box, 365-Night Trial & Forever Warranty costs $699.00 and earns the same composite as the $219.99 Zinus. Pay the difference for the trial length, not for the foam.

Zinus 12 Inch Queen Green Tea Essential Memory Foam Mattress, Medium Feel | All-Night Freshness & Breathability, Soothing Pressure Relief, CertiPUR-US & OEKO-TEX Certified
- Zinus 12 Inch Queen Green Tea Essential memory foam mattress, compressed in a box
- 12-inch profile
- Medium feel
- CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX certified, per the listing title
- Green tea and charcoal infused foam
Sleep Foundation's test lab measured the Zinus 12 Inch Queen Green Tea Essential Memory Foam Mattress, Medium Feel | All-Night Freshness & Breathability, Soothing Pressure Relief, CertiPUR-US & OEKO-TEX Certified on the exact 12-inch build sold here, which is unusual at the price and explains where it ranks. The Amazon listing title covers the build, promising green tea memory foam with CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX certification. Sleep Foundation calls the feel medium firm and rates it well for side sleepers up to 230lbs, with back sleepers close behind. One of their testers noted that the comfort layer cushioned the shoulders and hips enough to prevent pressure building overnight. Above 230lbs their side sleepers found the surface too soft to hold alignment. The same review names the limit that costs this bed most on our composite, recording a tendency to retain heat, with one tester describing the surface as warmer than average. Sleep Foundation also lists the terms that carry this pick, namely a 100-night trial alongside a 10-year warranty covering permanent impressions. One laboratory has published figures on this mattress rather than several, so read the evidence as a single reading rather than a consensus. Compared to the Nectar, this mattress trades away cooling and gains $479.01.
What We Love
- Sleep Foundation rated it 7/10 for side sleepers up to 230 pounds and 6.5/10 for back sleepers under 230 — real test-lab numbers at $219.99.
- Sleep Foundation lists a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty covering foam impressions of 1.5 inches or deeper.
- The listing title states both CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX certification, which the two most expensive beds here do not.
What Could Be Better
- Sleep Foundation scored temperature control 6.5/10 and found a tendency to retain heat; a tester called it on the warmer side.
- Sleep Foundation's side sleepers over 230 pounds found the surface too soft to hold alignment.
The Verdict
This is the pick that makes the price spread on this page mean something. The Zinus 12 Inch Queen Green Tea Essential Memory Foam Mattress, Medium Feel | All-Night Freshness & Breathability, Soothing Pressure Relief, CertiPUR-US & OEKO-TEX Certified earns the same composite as the $699.00 Nectar, because a 100-night trial and published lab scores cost you $219.99 here. Buy it and put the difference into a bed frame.
Best Budget: Novilla 12 Inch Queen Mattress in a Box, Gel Memory Foam for Cooling Night | Comfort & Pressure Relief, CertiPUR-US Certified
Novilla 12 Inch Queen Mattress in a Box, Gel Memory Foam for Cooling Night | Comfort & Pressure Relief, CertiPUR-US Certified
- Novilla 12 Inch Queen mattress in a box
- 12-inch profile
- Gel memory foam comfort layer
- CertiPUR-US certified, per the listing title
- Medium plush feel
Every roundup needs an honest floor, and the Novilla 12 Inch Queen Mattress in a Box, Gel Memory Foam for Cooling Night | Comfort & Pressure Relief, CertiPUR-US Certified is ours. The Amazon listing describes a 12-inch queen in a box, built on gel memory foam and certified under CertiPUR-US. The closest verified independent testing is Sleep Doctor's review of the Novilla Bliss, and it deserves careful rather than generous reading. They rate that mattress at the softer end of medium, and their testing found it performed best for side and back sleepers below 130lbs. It was not firm enough for stomach sleepers above that weight, nor for any tester above 230lbs. That range is the narrowest in this guide by a considerable distance, which is why it ranks last on position breadth. Their temperature rating sits among the warmest they recorded, with the specific observation that thicker foam absorbs more heat than the shallower version of the same mattress. One caution we will not paper over is the identity question. Sleep Doctor tested the Bliss, and the listing priced here is a different Novilla queen whose described construction matches the line. Sleep Doctor lists a 10-year limited warranty on that mattress. Spending $11.00 more on the Zinus buys a bed Sleep Foundation measured on the exact build sold.
What We Love
- The lowest entry price here for a real queen bed at $208.99.
- The Amazon listing title states CertiPUR-US certification, which the $699.00 Nectar's title does not.
- Sleep Doctor's testers found the 12-inch Novilla Bliss suited side and back sleepers under 130 pounds well.
What Could Be Better
- Sleep Doctor rated the 12-inch Novilla Bliss 4.5/10 on temperature control — among the warmest foam beds they measured.
- Their testers found it not firm enough for stomach sleepers over 130 pounds, or for any tester over 230 pounds.
- Sleep Doctor reviewed the Novilla Bliss; this is a different Novilla queen listing, and we could not verify the two are the identical build.
The Verdict
If the real choice is between this and the mattress a previous tenant left behind, take this one. The Novilla 12 Inch Queen Mattress in a Box, Gel Memory Foam for Cooling Night | Comfort & Pressure Relief, CertiPUR-US Certified costs $208.99, and the sleeper range is genuinely narrow. Read the sourcing caveat below before you order.
Best for Disclosed Materials: Lucid 12" Medium Firm Gel Memory Foam Mattress – Bamboo Charcoal & Cooling Gel – Fiberglass Free – Bed in a Box – CertiPUR-US Certified – Queen Size
Lucid 12" Medium Firm Gel Memory Foam Mattress – Bamboo Charcoal & Cooling Gel – Fiberglass Free – Bed in a Box – CertiPUR-US Certified – Queen Size
- Lucid 12" Medium Firm gel memory foam queen mattress, compressed in a box
- 12-inch profile
- Bamboo charcoal and cooling gel layers
- Fiberglass free, per the listing title
- CertiPUR-US certified, per the listing title
This is the only mattress here answering the fiberglass question on the listing itself. The Amazon title for the Lucid 12" Medium Firm Gel Memory Foam Mattress – Bamboo Charcoal & Cooling Gel – Fiberglass Free – Bed in a Box – CertiPUR-US Certified – Queen Size names bamboo charcoal and cooling gel, then states fiberglass free and CertiPUR-US certification. Fiberglass is a standard low-cost fire barrier in foam mattresses, sealed in an inner sock beneath the cover. It stays inert while the cover remains zipped, and becomes a household mess once that cover comes off. Stating fiberglass free removes a question you otherwise answer by reading a law label after delivery. What it does not do is sleep cool, and the laboratories are unanimous. Sleep Foundation rated temperature control near the bottom of this roundup, explaining that foam density restricts air circulation and retains heat. Mattress Clarity agrees, declining to recommend it for especially hot sleepers, and found the edge gave way beneath a seated tester. Their review covers Lucid's 10-inch build rather than the 12-inch priced here, so treat it as the nearest available reading rather than a test of this mattress. The figure costing it most on our weighted composite is the return window, which Sleep Foundation lists as 30 days against 100 nights elsewhere. They pair it with a 10-year limited warranty.
What We Love
- The only listing here that states fiberglass free in its title — a specific, checkable answer to a real consumer problem.
- Also states CertiPUR-US certification, so two material questions are answered before you open the box.
- Mattress Clarity rates the Lucid gel foam 6.5/10, the industry medium-firm standard, and good for side sleepers and average-weight back sleepers — on the 10-inch build they reviewed, not the 12-inch sold here.
What Could Be Better
- Sleep Foundation lists a 30-day return window — the shortest trial in this guide by 70 nights.
- Sleep Foundation scored temperature control 4.5/10 on the Medium build and says the foam density restricts air circulation and retains heat.
- Mattress Clarity found testers sank through the top comfort layer when sitting on the edge of the 10-inch model, and estimates five to seven years of service.
The Verdict
Buy this one because you want the materials question settled in writing, not because it sleeps coolest. The Lucid 12" Medium Firm Gel Memory Foam Mattress – Bamboo Charcoal & Cooling Gel – Fiberglass Free – Bed in a Box – CertiPUR-US Certified – Queen Size costs $449.99 and gives you a 30-day return window, which asks you to be right about firmness on the first try.

- Heat Management (25%)Measured temperature-control performance from a test lab, not the cooling language on the listing. Every mattress here claims cooling. The published figures range from 4.5/10 to 7.5/10.
- Trial & Warranty Safety Net (20%)How long you have to send back a mattress you got wrong, and how long the warranty runs afterward. This protects a first-time buyer who has never chosen a firmness, and it ranges from 30 days to 365 nights here.

6.3/10A 9.0 on value per dollar at $208.99 does most of the work. A 5.0 on sleep position range is the lowest figure here and reflects a genuinely narrow fit.

5.9/10Lowest composite despite a mid-pack $449.99 price. A 4.0 on trial and warranty — Sleep Foundation lists 30 days — and a 5.0 on heat management are what cost it.

DormGearHQ analysis of Amazon specs and ratings from Sleep Foundation, Mattress Clarity and Sleep Doctor, August 2026
What all five share
All five mattresses are 12-inch queens, so every one accepts a standard queen sheet set without deep pockets. All five arrive compressed in a box, and all five want a flat supportive base underneath. A platform frame or closely spaced slats works, and none of them requires a box spring. What separates them is paperwork rather than fit, and the table below is the condensed version. A listing that omits the fiberglass phrase is not a listing admitting fiberglass, but one saying nothing at all. Only the Lucid answers that question in its title. Warranty length and trial length are also different promises entirely. A 10-year warranty covers manufacturing defects and sagging past a stated depth, and it never covers buying the wrong firmness. Sleep Foundation lists a 10-year term on the Sweetnight, the Zinus and the Lucid alike. Compared to that warranty, the trial window matters far more to somebody choosing a firmness for the first time. A longer trial enables you to discover a firmness mistake in your own bedroom rather than a showroom. Above 230lbs the published testing consistently finds these foam beds too soft to hold alignment. Our DGH First-Apartment Sleep Score therefore weights the trial and warranty factor around the protection you will realistically use.
The other thing worth planning is the stairwell. A compressed queen box is dense, rectangular and handle-less, and it does not bend around a tight landing. The Sweetnight is the hardest of the five, because a coil unit is steel and no other bed here contains one. Treat any queen box as a two-person carry, and measure the tightest turn on your stairs before delivery day. Open the box inside the room where the bed will live rather than in the hallway. An expanded queen mattress will not pass through a doorway the way a compressed one does. A bedroom needs roughly 10 ft of clear wall to take a queen plus a nightstand comfortably. That extra steel produces the only meaningful gap in our box handling factor. Compared to the four foam boxes, the hybrid demands a second pair of hands more often than not. Neither box weight nor the stairwell enters the DGH First-Apartment Sleep Score, which measures how a mattress sleeps and how well it protects you afterward. How long each mattress takes to expand, and whether sleeping on it immediately is advisable, we answer separately in the companion guide linked below.

Frequently Asked Questions
I slept fine on a Twin XL in the dorm — do I actually need a queen?
A Twin XL is 38 by 80 inches; a queen is 60 by 80. You gain 22 inches of width and no length. If you sleep alone and never share the bed, a Twin XL or a full is cheaper and reasonable. It also keeps any dorm bedding you already own. The case for a queen is that it is the size everything else is built around. Frames, sheets, protectors and toppers are cheapest and most available in queen. It is also the size that still works if your living situation changes mid-lease. Measure the room first. A queen plus a nightstand needs roughly 10 feet of wall, and a bed you cannot walk around is a bed you will resent.
Memory foam or hybrid for a first apartment?
Choose a hybrid if you sleep hot or sit on the edge of the bed daily. Choose foam if budget is the binding constraint, or if motion transfer between two sleepers is your main complaint. Memory foam contours by softening where it is warm, and that same property makes it hold heat. An all-foam edge also has nothing structural in it to sit on, and a coil unit fixes that at the cost of weight in the box and price on the listing. On heat, go by the published figures rather than by what the bed is built from. In this roundup the one hybrid was rated 7.5 out of 10 on temperature control by Sleep Foundation. The all-foam beds that they and Sleep Doctor measured came in between 4.5 and 6.5. That gap is the honest summary of the decision.
What is the fiberglass issue with cheap mattresses, and how do I check?
Fiberglass is a common low-cost fire barrier in foam mattresses. It is woven into an inner sock under the cover, where it stays inert as long as that cover stays sealed. The problem is the zippered cover. Unzipping or washing it can release fine glass fibers into a bedroom, where they embed in carpet, bedding and clothing and are difficult to clean up. Two rules follow. Never remove a mattress cover unless the manufacturer says it is washable, and treat a 'do not remove' tag as the warning it is. Before buying, look for 'fiberglass free' in the listing title or materials list. Of the five here, only the Lucid states it. Absence is not proof fiberglass is present. It means the question is unanswered, and the law label sewn to the mattress is where you answer it after delivery.
Which firmness should I buy for how I sleep?
Side sleepers generally do best on medium to medium-firm, because the shoulder and hip need somewhere to go. The test labs consistently score budget foam highest for side sleepers for exactly this reason. Back sleepers want medium-firm to firm, with enough give at the lumbar curve without the hips dropping. Stomach sleepers need the firmest option available, because any sink at the hips bends the lower back. It is also the position budget foam serves worst, with published stomach-sleeper scores here topping out at 6.5 out of 10 and falling to 4. Body weight shifts all of this. Above roughly 230 pounds, buy a step firmer than the general advice, because you compress more of the comfort layer. If you sleep in more than one position, buy for the one you wake up in.
What is the difference between a sleep trial and a warranty?
A sleep trial is your window to return a mattress because you do not like it — wrong firmness, too hot, not what you expected. It usually means a refund, and often requires a break-in period of a few weeks before a return can start. A warranty covers manufacturing defects and sagging past a stated depth, commonly 1.5 inches of permanent impression, for a fixed number of years. They protect against different failures, and neither substitutes for the other. On this page the trials range from 30 days to 365 nights, and the warranties from 10 years to a Forever Warranty. If you have never chosen a mattress firmness before, trial length is the more important number. Getting the firmness wrong is a far more likely outcome than a manufacturing defect.

Skip a queen entirely if you sleep alone in a bedroom under about 10 by 10 feet. Expert review sources used in this analysis:
- Prices, condition, seller-of-record and full listing titles for all five mattresses were pulled live from their Amazon listings via the Amazon Creators API
- Each listing title was then re-read directly the same day
- Those figures are current as of August 2026
- All five are sold by Amazon.com and all five are new
- Third-party test-lab figures were checked at write time, source by source
- No factor in our weighted composite is normalized from anything we did not read ourselves
- Sleep Foundation supplied the SweetNight CoolNest ratings, the Zinus Green Tea ratings and the Lucid Gel Memory Foam ratings
- Sleep Doctor supplied the Nectar Classic ratings and the Novilla Bliss ratings
- Mattress Clarity supplied a second reading on the Lucid, and on the Lucid only
- The Zinus is carried by a single laboratory reading rather than two
- Five gaps are worth stating plainly rather than papering over
- First, Sleep Foundation publishes CoolNest ratings by profile height across both the all-foam and the hybrid builds
- The position figures cited here are their 12-inch hybrid rows, which is the build sold on this page
- Their temperature figures are published against profile height and are not split by build, and Sleep Foundation's own explanation is that the cooling ratings track profile thickness
- Second, Mattress Clarity's Lucid review covers the 10-inch build of that line, while the Lucid priced here is the 12-inch
- We cite it as the nearest available reading rather than as a test of this mattress
- Third, Sleep Foundation's Lucid review tested the Soft and Medium builds of that line, while the mattress priced here is the Medium Firm
- Their temperature and position figures are the closest verified evidence, not a test of this exact firmness
- Fourth, Sleep Doctor reviewed the Novilla Bliss 12-inch
- The Novilla listing priced on this page is a different queen listing whose described construction matches the line, and we did not verify the two are the identical build
- Fifth, we found no Consumer Reports or Good Housekeeping coverage of fiberglass in mattresses that we could verify at write time
- Nothing on this page therefore attributes the fiberglass explanation to either outlet
- The only fiberglass claim we make about a specific product is that the Lucid listing title states fiberglass free, which we read directly
- We have not slept on any of these mattresses
- Compared to the marketing language on each listing, the laboratory measurements were treated as the deciding evidence throughout
- That method yields a ranking that sometimes disagrees with price, as the Lucid demonstrates
- Every composite in the DGH First-Apartment Sleep Score rests on published figures rather than manufacturer claims, and the 10-year warranty terms were read from the review pages that publish them
- Every score on this page is DormGearHQ's own weighting of those verified listing facts and published lab figures, not a synthesis of outside review scores.
