Mattress in a Box Expansion Time: Safe to Sleep Night One?

Every brand on this page publishes an expansion ceiling of 72 hours. Two of them also state, in their own words, that you can sleep on the mattress before that window closes. The Zinus 12" Green Tea ($219.99) is the clearest of the four on both questions.

The Short Answer

Manufacturer guidance converges on a 72-hour expansion ceiling, and most owners occupy the mattress considerably earlier. The Zinus 12" Green Tea at $219.99 is the recommendation whenever night one is the constraint, because Zinus publishes that ceiling alongside explicit permission to sleep immediately.

A mattress in a box is an ordinary foam mattress, compressed under industrial pressure and sealed in plastic. Cutting the plastic lets air back into the foam cells. The foam then pushes itself toward its rated height, which produces a recovery measured in hours rather than minutes. Density is why the wait varies between models. A denser comfort layer holds its compressed shape longer, so it re-inflates slowly compared to a thinner one. Cold delays it further, and a box that sat in a delivery truck overnight starts stiff. We read every expansion window on this page directly on the manufacturer's own website, verified August 2026. We also re-read each Amazon listing the same day. We then scored these four on the DGH First-Night Readiness Score, a weighted composite whose four factors measure published guidance rather than sleep quality. Every manufacturer names a ceiling of 72 hours.

  • Zinus 12 Inch Queen Green Tea Essential memory foam mattress, compressed in a box
  • 12-inch profile, medium feel
  • Green tea and charcoal infused foam
  • Published window: up to 72 hours to full height
  • Published first-night guidance: safe to sleep on

Zinus is the only manufacturer here that answers this question in its own published language. Its Green Tea memory foam product page states that it may take up to 72 hours for your mattress to fluff up to its full height. The identical page confirms that sleeping on it the first night is safe. It additionally advises that jumping, walking and sleeping on your mattress actually helps with decompression. That is the most unambiguous authorization published anywhere on this page. It produces 9.5 on both heavily weighted guidance factors inside the DGH First-Night Readiness Score. Two honest qualifications belong alongside it. The Amazon listing we verified at $219.99 is the Green Tea Essential configuration. That 72-hour language appears on the current Green Tea collection page rather than on the identical listing, so we are citing collection-level guidance. Regarding odor, Zinus publishes absolutely nothing. Green tea and charcoal infusion constitutes an odor positioning claim rather than a measured dissipation window, which yields 7.0 on odor load compared to 8.0 for Nectar.

What We Love

  • The only brand here that states in print it is safe to sleep on the first night.
  • Zinus also says jumping, walking and sleeping on the mattress helps with decompression.
  • A named ceiling — up to 72 hours to full height — rather than a vague range.

What Could Be Better

  • Zinus publishes nothing about off-gassing or how long a new-foam smell lasts.
  • The 72-hour language sits on the current Green Tea line page, not on this exact Amazon listing.

The Verdict

If the box lands on the day you need somewhere to sleep, this is the mattress with the clearest answer behind it. The Zinus 12 Inch Queen Green Tea Essential Memory Foam Mattress, Medium Feel | All-Night Freshness & Breathability, Soothing Pressure Relief, CertiPUR-US & OEKO-TEX Certified delivers the top DGH First-Night Readiness Score at 8.8. Zinus put the first-night question in writing instead of leaving it to a forum, and $219.99 is the cheapest explicit permission to sleep on it night one.

  • Nectar 12" memory foam queen mattress, compressed in a box
  • 12-inch profile, Medium Firm feel
  • Published window: 24-72 hours to full expansion
  • Published first-night guidance: sleeping right away will not harm it
  • Published odor guidance: off-gassing usually limited or nonexistent

Nectar's published guidance is the most complete of the four. Its help content states that it may take between 24-72 hours to fully expand to its intended size. It answers the sleep question directly too: sleeping on your mattress right away will not harm your mattress. On smell it goes further than anyone else here. Nectar says off-gassing is usually limited or nonexistent, and that any faint opening smell of fresh foam will dissipate quickly. Read that as a manufacturer's position rather than a measurement. Sleep Foundation supplies the useful counterweight. It describes off-gassing as volatile organic compound emissions produced by synthetic foam manufacturing, and says most odor clears within a few hours of unpacking. Traces can persist several days to a few weeks on mostly-synthetic builds. The Amazon listing for the Nectar 12" Memory Foam Mattress, Queen, Medium Firm | Contouring Memory Foam, Cooling Top Layer, Back Pain & Pressure Relief, Mattress in a Box, 365-Night Trial & Forever Warranty, verified August 2026 at $699.00, describes exactly that kind of all-foam build. Ventilate anyway. What the price buys here is a manufacturer that answered both questions publicly, which is precisely what the weighted formula behind the DGH First-Night Readiness Score rewards.

What We Love

  • A specific published range — 24 to 72 hours — rather than a single ceiling figure.
  • Nectar states plainly that sleeping on your mattress right away will not harm your mattress.
  • The only brand of the four that makes a positive, published claim about off-gassing.

What Could Be Better

  • The odor language is a manufacturer claim, not a measured emissions figure from a test lab.
  • At $699.00 it is by far the most expensive way to buy a clear expansion answer.

The Verdict

If what actually worries you about a compressed mattress is the smell in a small bedroom, this is the brand that has addressed it. The Nectar 12" Memory Foam Mattress, Queen, Medium Firm | Contouring Memory Foam, Cooling Top Layer, Back Pain & Pressure Relief, Mattress in a Box, 365-Night Trial & Forever Warranty earns 8.7 on the DGH First-Night Readiness Score, a tenth behind the Zinus. It is also the only one of the four to publish an odor position at all.

  • Lucid 12" Medium Firm gel memory foam queen mattress, compressed in a box
  • 12-inch profile
  • Bamboo charcoal and cooling gel layers
  • Published care instruction: allow to decompress 24 - 72 hours
  • No published first-night or odor guidance found

Lucid publishes the number and disregards the question. Its premium memory foam product page covers the 12-inch and 14-inch builds. That page carries a care instruction reading: allow to decompress 24 - 72 hours, do not remove cover, spot clean only. That is a genuinely published range, it matches Nectar's exactly, and it applies to the 12-inch Medium Firm gel and bamboo charcoal configuration we verified at $449.99 on Amazon. On the guidance factor carrying the most weight here, Lucid therefore sits in the same tier as Nectar rather than at the bottom of the page. What we could not locate, in August 2026, was any Lucid statement about sleeping on the mattress before those 72 hours elapse. Its FAQ page and its shipping and returns page communicate nothing about expansion, first-night occupancy or odor. The distinction that still costs it is placement rather than content. Nectar and Novilla answer setup questions on customer-facing FAQ pages, where a buyer would think to look. Lucid leaves the figure in product care text and stops there. Nothing here indicates the Lucid 12" Medium Firm Gel Memory Foam Mattress – Bamboo Charcoal & Cooling Gel – Fiberglass Free – Bed in a Box – CertiPUR-US Certified – Queen Size is unsafe on night one. It indicates that nobody at Lucid has published a determination either way.

What We Love

  • Lucid publishes a decompression range — 24 to 72 hours — on the product page covering the 12-inch build it sells.
  • The same care text says do not remove cover, which is the correct instruction for a foam mattress.
  • The range matches what Nectar publishes, so the figure itself is unremarkable and believable.

What Could Be Better

  • We found no Lucid statement anywhere about whether you can sleep on it before that window closes.
  • The figure sits in product care text rather than on a customer-facing FAQ, where Nectar and Novilla answer the same questions.
  • Lucid's FAQ and shipping pages say nothing about expansion, odor or first-night use.

The Verdict

If you want a manufacturer to have thought about your first night, this is the one that has not published its thinking. The Lucid 12" Medium Firm Gel Memory Foam Mattress – Bamboo Charcoal & Cooling Gel – Fiberglass Free – Bed in a Box – CertiPUR-US Certified – Queen Size earns 7.3, because its 24-72 hour range covers the build you are buying. What is absent is any word on sleeping before that window closes. At $449.99, buy it for the mattress rather than the unboxing.

  • 12-inch profile, gel memory foam comfort layer
  • Published window: 12-72 hours to full expansion
  • Published early figure: technically usable after six hours
  • Published recommendation: wait the full 72 hours

Novilla publishes the widest window and the only stated minimum. Its FAQ says to allow your mattress to expand fully, which might take 12-72 hours. It also states that using the mattress after six hours is technically possible. Then it makes a recommendation the other manufacturers do not. Novilla asks you to wait the recommended 72 hours, so the mattress fully expands and any unpleasant odors produced during manufacturing and transportation are eliminated. That is a manufacturer telling you night one is not the plan. It produces 6.5 on first-night usability and 5.5 on odor load, the lowest odor-load mark in this guide. That is useful information rather than a defect. The Amazon listing for the Novilla 12 Inch Queen Mattress in a Box, Gel Memory Foam for Cooling Night | Comfort & Pressure Relief, CertiPUR-US Certified, verified August 2026 at $208.99, describes a 12-inch gel memory foam queen. Sleep Foundation's remedy for exactly this situation is ventilation and time. Give it a day, and Novilla's own figures indicate you will be fine.

What We Love

  • The only brand here that names a specific early hour — six — after which the mattress is usable.
  • A published range with a genuine low end, which suggests the foam is not unusually dense.
  • Novilla addresses odor directly and explains why it wants you to wait.

What Could Be Better

  • The brand's own recommendation is to wait the full 72 hours, which is the opposite of a night-one green light.
  • 12 to 72 hours is the widest published range of the four, so it plans your evening for you least well.
  • The stated reason for waiting is odor from manufacturing and transportation, a real cost of unboxing early.

The Verdict

If you unbox in the morning and need the bed by evening, six hours is a figure you can plan against. Novilla is the only brand here that publishes one. The Novilla 12 Inch Queen Mattress in a Box, Gel Memory Foam for Cooling Night | Comfort & Pressure Relief, CertiPUR-US Certified earns 7.0 with us because the same page then asks you to wait 72 hours, and $208.99 is the lowest price in this guide.

Score Formula

weighted composite (0-10): published_expansion_guidance (30%) + first_night_usability (30%) + odor_load (20%) + box_to_bed_effort (20%), each factor normalized to a 0-10 scale

Score Factors

  • Published Expansion Guidance (30%)Whether the manufacturer publishes an expansion window at all, how specific that figure is, and whether it applies to the build actually being sold. A brand that names a range has committed to a number you can plan against. A brand that names nothing has left you to guess.
  • First-Night Usability (30%)What the manufacturer itself says about sleeping on the mattress the night it is unboxed. Two of these four give an explicit green light, one asks you to wait, and one has published nothing either way. This factor rewards a published answer rather than an inferred one.
  • Odor Load (20%)How much new-foam smell to plan for on night one, and whether the brand has addressed odor in public. Sleep Foundation's off-gassing guidance sets the general baseline. A published brand position then raises or lowers the expectation relative to that baseline.
  • Box-to-Bed Effort (20%)Steps between cutting the plastic and lying down. All four here are all-foam queens with no coil unit, so this factor is flat across the guide. It is included for formula completeness rather than for separation between models.

DormGearHQ analysis of manufacturer-published expansion guidance and Amazon listing specifications, August 2026

Sleeping on it night one, the smell, and the one-night plan

Is it safe to sleep on a partly expanded mattress? For a compressed foam mattress, generally yes, and two manufacturers here confirm it in published guidance. Zinus states that expansion to full height may require up to 72 hours, and that sleeping on it the first night is safe. Nectar independently states that immediate occupancy will not damage your mattress. Structurally, a partially expanded polyurethane foam mattress endangers neither the sleeper nor the material. Zinus goes considerably further, advising that jumping, walking and sleeping actively accelerate decompression. Acknowledge the compromise, however. A mattress at approximately eighty percent of its intended height is firmer, thinner and noticeably less even compared to the finished product. That unfamiliar sensation persists for several days, and it does not indicate a manufacturing defect. First-night usability is the factor our weighted composite treats as most decisive alongside published guidance.

The smell has a name and a rough schedule. That chemical odor on opening is off-gassing. Sleep Foundation describes it as volatile organic compound emissions, a byproduct of the synthetic foam manufacturing process. It says the majority dissipates within a few hours of unpacking. Traces can linger for several days to a few weeks on models built mostly from synthetic foam. All four Amazon listings we verified describe exactly that kind of all-foam construction. Sleep Foundation's remedy is ventilation and time: unwrap in a well-ventilated room, open a window, run a fan. Two brands on this page address odor and two do not. Nectar says off-gassing is usually limited or nonexistent. Novilla takes the opposite line, asking you to wait the recommended 72 hours specifically so odors from manufacturing and transportation clear. Zinus and Lucid publish nothing on the subject, so plan for the general case.

One night and no backup bed is the hardest version of this problem. Unbox immediately on arrival, inside the bedroom the mattress is destined for. A fully expanded queen will not negotiate a doorway the way a compressed one does. Cut the plastic, position the mattress flat on its foundation, and leave it undisturbed. Sleep Foundation's ventilation guidance applies directly here: open the window before you open the box. Every additional hour before bedtime delivers recoverable height. If occupancy that evening is unavoidable, install a protector and bedding, then sleep normally. Walking and sleeping on polyurethane foam accelerates decompression rather than delaying it. What you genuinely should not do is evaluate the mattress. Firmness, contouring and edge behaviour remain unrepresentative until expansion completes. Returning a mattress on night two because it registered as hard is the most common avoidable mistake in this category.

All four are 12-inch all-foam queens requiring a flat, supportive foundation — a platform frame or closely spaced slats, never a box spring. None contains a coil unit, so none carries the additional weight or slower recovery a hybrid introduces. The physical unboxing is effectively identical across the four. Every difference that matters for night one resides in published manufacturer guidance, examined individually and verified August 2026. One row below deserves annotation. "Published on a brand FAQ page" separates guidance a company treats as customer support from care instructions buried in a product description. That row is where Lucid comes up short, and it is the only thing separating its expansion guidance from Nectar's. Both publish 24 to 72 hours for the build being sold, but Nectar puts the figure where a buyer would think to look, compared to Lucid's product care text. The DGH First-Night Readiness Score deliberately rewards the published record. If you instead want a purchasing recommendation, that decision belongs to our first-apartment queen mattress hub. Its composite evaluates five mattresses on sleep quality rather than on setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a mattress in a box take to expand?

Plan on up to 72 hours. That is the ceiling all four manufacturers on this page publish, read on their own sites and verified August 2026. Nectar and Lucid both state 24 to 72 hours. Novilla states 12 to 72 hours, and adds that the mattress is technically usable after six. Zinus states that it may take up to 72 hours to reach full height. Most foam mattresses look close to finished well before the ceiling. A cold box that came off a truck in winter takes longer compared to a warm one. Note that none of these four publishes the 24-to-48-hour figure repeated constantly online. It is a reasonable summary of typical behavior, but it is not a manufacturer number, and we will not attribute it to one.

Is it safe to sleep on a mattress in a box the first night?

For a foam mattress, usually yes, and two of these four brands say so directly. Zinus states it is safe to sleep on the first night. Nectar states that sleeping on your mattress right away will not harm your mattress. Novilla says use after six hours is technically possible, but recommends waiting the full 72 hours so odors clear. Lucid publishes no position either way. The real cost of sleeping on it early is not safety, it is feel. A mattress at partial height is firmer, thinner and less even compared to the finished product, and it stays that way for a few days. If another bed is available for two nights, use it. If not, sleep on the new one and do not judge it yet.

Does sleeping on it slow the expansion down?

Not meaningfully, and Zinus argues the opposite. Its guidance says jumping, walking and sleeping on your mattress actually helps with decompression, because pressure moves air through the foam cells. The nuance worth knowing is local rather than global. Lying in the same spot every night while the foam recovers can leave that area behind the rest for a day or two, which is why the surface may feel uneven early on. It evens out. The practical version is that body weight is not the enemy of expansion. Cold is. A box that sat in an unheated hallway or a garage expands noticeably more slowly compared to one unwrapped in a warm room.

Why does a new mattress smell, and is the smell harmful?

The smell is off-gassing. Sleep Foundation describes it as volatile organic compound emissions, a byproduct of the synthetic foam manufacturing process, released when the mattress leaves its packaging for the first time. Sleep Foundation states that the majority of the odor dissipates within a few hours of unpacking. Traces can remain noticeable for several days to a few weeks on models built mostly from synthetic foam, which describes all four mattresses in this guide. The remedy is ventilation and time: unwrap in a well-ventilated room, open windows, run a fan. Of the four brands here, only Nectar and Novilla address odor at all. If you are unusually sensitive to smells, unwrap earlier in the day than you think you need to.

I have one night and nowhere else to sleep. What is the plan?

Unbox as soon as the box arrives, and do it in the room the bed is going in. An expanded queen will not fit through a doorway the way a compressed one will. Cut the plastic, get the mattress flat on its frame or slats, open a window and leave it. Every hour before bedtime is height you get back. When it is time to sleep, put a protector and sheets on and go to bed. It will feel firm and slightly thin, which is expected rather than wrong. Give it a full week before forming an opinion on firmness. Most sleep trials also require a break-in period of several weeks before a return can even be started. Judging a compressed mattress on night two is how people return a bed that would have been fine.

Bottom Line

This page ranks these four on how ready they are on night one. That is a narrow question, and a deliberately different axis compared to how good a mattress is to sleep on for a year. If what you are actually deciding is which queen to buy, use our best queen mattress for a first apartment guide instead. It scores five beds, including a hybrid this page does not cover, on sleep position range, heat, trial terms and price. Come back here once the box is on its way.

Expert review sources used in this analysis:

  1. Prices, condition, seller-of-record and listing titles for all four mattresses were pulled live from their Amazon listings via the Amazon Creators API on August 16, 2026
  2. All four are new and all four are sold by Amazon.com
  3. Every expansion figure on this page was read directly on the manufacturer's own site the same day
  4. Each is quoted rather than paraphrased, and verified August 2026
  5. Zinus states, on its current Green Tea memory foam product page, that it may take up to 72 hours for your mattress to fluff up to its full height
  6. The same page states that it is safe to sleep on the first night
  7. It further states that jumping, walking and sleeping on your mattress actually helps with decompression
  8. Nectar states, in its FAQ, that it may take between 24-72 hours to fully expand to its intended size
  9. Nectar also states that sleeping on your mattress right away will not harm your mattress, and that off-gassing is usually limited or nonexistent
  10. Novilla states, in its FAQ, that you should allow your mattress to expand fully, which might take 12-72 hours
  11. Novilla adds that use after six hours is technically possible
  12. It recommends waiting the recommended 72 hours so odors produced during manufacturing and transportation are eliminated
  13. Lucid publishes a care instruction reading allow to decompress 24 - 72 hours, do not remove cover, spot clean only
  14. The general off-gassing explanation on this page comes from Sleep Foundation's off-gassing page, read on August 16, 2026
  15. That page describes off-gassing as volatile organic compound emissions from synthetic foam manufacturing
  16. It states that the majority dissipates within a few hours of unpacking
  17. It adds that traces can persist several days to a few weeks on mostly-synthetic models, and that the remedy is ventilation and time
  18. Four gaps are stated rather than filled
  19. First, the Zinus 72-hour language appears on the Green Tea collection product page, not on the Green Tea Essential listing priced here
  20. It is therefore collection-level guidance rather than a per-listing statement
  21. Second, Lucid's decompression instruction is published in the care text on its premium memory foam product page, which covers the 12-inch and 14-inch builds
  22. That is the build sold on Amazon here, so the figure applies to the mattress priced on this page
  23. What separates it from Nectar's identical range is placement: Lucid leaves it in product care text rather than on a customer-facing FAQ
  24. Third, we read Lucid's FAQ page and its shipping and returns page and found no statement about first-night use or odor
  25. This guide therefore attributes none to Lucid
  26. Fourth, we reached no live expansion-timing page at Sleep Doctor
  27. Mattress Clarity's site is reachable, and we simply did not use it for expansion timing
  28. Neither outlet is cited here
  29. Sleep Foundation is the only third-party source on this page, and it is cited only for off-gassing
  30. We have not slept on any of these mattresses
  31. Every composite here is DormGearHQ's own weighted formula applied to those verified published statements.
